LED Light Bulb Guide - Advantages of LEDs

LED light bulbs are uniquely placed to offer new lighting applications and techniques in addition to those already existing. There are many advantages to using LED lighting, advantages which will increase as the cost of manufacture of LED light bulbs decreases.

Economic Advantages
The long lifetime of LED light bulbs, up to 50,000 hours, means that in most applications LED light bulbs are maintenance free. Replacement lamp costs are also lower since only one bulb per 50,000 hours is required. If LED light bulbs are replacing bulbs such as halogen spotlights one LED light bulb will last as long as 50 halogen bulbs.

Architectural Advantages
Coloured lighting can be produced much more efficiently by LEDs than traditional lighting can. LED light bulbs also provide a much richer and consistent colour given their narrow wavelength and there is greater scope for colour mixing. The compact size of LED light bulbs and therefore the size of the luminaries is particularly useful for accent lighting and effects. Coupled with coloured lighting, the scope for attractive design is large. Large reflectors can be dispensed with, making LED luminaries highly versatile. Since LEDs have no UV or IR in their spectrum, delicate and sensitive objects such as food or artefacts can be it at close range and are not put under any stress.

Technical Advantages
LED light bulbs are an extremely safe form of lighting, typically requiring low voltages and emitting little heat in the direction of illumination. Even in the event of a fault, they remain safe. Whether used in high or low-power applications, it is now possible to dim LEDs from 0 to 100% and the colour can be controlled easily, giving precise control over the intensity and composition of the light. Instant start up means switching is smooth. Unlike CFL or fluorescent lighting, LED lighting does not flicker, reducing eye strain and other problems for those with photo-reactive illnesses. Physically strong, LEDs are durable against both impact and vibration meaning LED light bulbs can be used in hazardous, hostile and challenging environments.

Environmental Advantages
The low energy use of LEDs means that highly efficient lighting solutions can be developed to replace existing, inefficient lighting. The longevity of LED light bulbs mean that fewer lamps are required or need to be disposed of.
